Adrienne Raquel is a 25-year-old creative based in NYC who is originally from Cleveland, Ohio, tells us she draws a lot of inspiration from Houston’s sub-tropical environment, where she studied at university. When we found Adrienne's profile on instagram, we definitely saw the tropical references, bright, colourful and bursting with life, we fell in love with her feed. Raquel tells us "I love to capture shots that are reminiscent of summer and tropical settings, I incorporate a lot of these elements into my photography." We caught up with Adrienne to talk more about her influences.
"I’m all about girl power!! My work is heavily influenced by the essence of femininity, beauty, and of course vibrant colors!!"
CM: SO, WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET YOUR HANDS ON A CAMERA?
ADRIENNE: The 1st time I picked up a camera was in high school, but I didn’t develop my passion for photography until I was in college. I began taking self-portraits and then eventually moved on to photograph models. Now, I am focusing more on conceptual shots and still-life photography.
CM: YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A CREATIVE, WHAT DOES THAT TERM MEAN TO YOU?
AR: I describe myself as a creative because I am literally a woman of all trades – I don’t like to categorise myself as solely a photographer because I am an overall creative being. I live & breathe all things visual – whether it is photography, design, painting, or drawing – I LOVE IT ALL – I can do it all.
CM: YOUR WORK IS BEAUTIFUL. YOU FEATURE A LOT OF VIVID COLOURS- ESPECIALLY PINKS ON YOUR INSTAGRAM, IS THAT COINCIDENTAL OR DELIBERATE?
AR: Thank you! Yes – I am an absolute colour lover and the colours that I incorporate into my photography are all intentional. Everywhere I travel, I’m constantly in search of colourful places and objects. I seriously have over 20,000 photos in my iPhone of things that I spot on the streets of NYC!
Not to mention the fact that I’ve developed this growing obsession for pink lately! Pink is such a divine colour and it possesses so many meanings. In colour psychology, pink symbolises a sign of hope and ultimately brings forth warm and comforting feelings that reassure emotional energy. I want my work to evoke these same feelings – I want my viewers to feel good vibes!!
CM: WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM SUBJECT TO HAVE IN THE STUDIO?
AR: Ahh, this is a hard one! I would have to say that my dream subject would be Solange Knowles. Everything she does is just immaculate! I truly admire her aesthetic, her use of colour, and her overall artistry. She’s the epitome of a phenomenal woman!
CM: WHAT IS THE CREATIVE SCENE LIKE IN THE STATES? DO YOU FEEL LIKE PEOPLE COLLABORATE A LOT OR ARE THINGS QUITE SEPARATE?
AR: The creative scene in the U.S. is flourishing at the moment! – Especially amongst young, black creatives. With so many outlets to connect, such as Instagram and VSCO, the creative scene has erupted with so many amazing works of art.
NYC is historically known for being a mecca of creativity. So, there is a huge creative scene and I would say that it’s definitely a collaborative environment. I’ve connected with so many amazing photographers and artists since I’ve been in NYC. Everyone here is nurturing in a sense and supportive of one another. We’re all trying to grow and eat together!
CM: YOU WORK WITH A LOT OF FEMALES ON YOUR SHOOTS, WOULD YOU AGREE THERE’S A LACK OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN IN THE INDUSTRY?
AR: Yes!! – I’m all about girls supporting girls. My entire team is comprised of talented women and I LOVE shooting women. Women seriously have a sense of beauty, sexuality, and mysteriousness that is so versatile – unlike like no other.
"When it comes to women thriving in the industry, I feel like there are an ample amount of creative opportunities! Which is one aspect that I truly admire about the creative industry – I don’t feel as though there are any assigned gender roles."
CM: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE?
AR: I’m working on a number of special projects this year. I’ve got some awesome brand collaborations in the works that I’m SUPER stoked about!! I’m also working on a personal project with a very close friend of mine. You all must stay tuned!! Everything will be well worth the wait.
