It goes without saying that Grime has come back in a big way this year. With Stormzy winning Best International Act: UK – amongst nominees like FKA twigs and Fuse ODG – and Drake practising his London chat when he introduced Skepta to shutdown the stage during his Wireless performance, the unapologetically British genre is pushing boundaries that once may have seemed impossible.
When Bonkaz released ‘We Run The Block’ earlier this year, he added fuel to the fire with a video for the track. The ‘New Generation’ trailblazer sprays some clever metaphors via an impressive lyrical delivery, which has attracted radio support from the major UK radio stations: BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra, Capital FM and Capital Xtra. What’s more, Bonkaz performed at 2 of the Glastonbury dates - one being a PA with BBC Radio 1Xtra’s DJ Target and the second a full set on the Sonic Stage before Krept & Konan.
Unsurprisingly, ‘We Run The Block’ has inspired some remixes; and the one that I'm currently turning up to comes from three of the Croydon MC’s fellow South Londoners The Writers Block, who have steered away from their usual House releases (which, might I add, really bang) to bring a fiery rendition of the track. Reminiscent of TNGHT’s ‘Higher Ground’, The Writers Block has managed to keep the original song’s energy while adding extra oomph that really complements Bonkaz’s flow. The mixture of Grime with Trap blends perfectly, which makes it my go-to choice for this song. Check it out below!
